A lot of servers use bots when they're empty, this isn't new. That said, I'm personally not a fan of them, but it doesn't hurt to try for a while and see if they actually decrease traffic.

Now the reason bots were added was because a lot of people are bored trying to fill the server. As you mentioned, I don't play TF2 anymore, so I'm not one of these people that have to wait sometimes for an hour to get the server started. And it's usually the same people every day that help getting things started. I've idled on "my" server for probably weeks all counted together, and it was really boring. And it was easier too back then, since Valve has made a lot of changes against community servers these past 2 years.

Overall, thank you for your feedback, bots will remain for a bit longer until I get more data.

Yes, you can with the Server Browser like DrQuantum said. Or you can connect via the console:
connect serverip:serverport

In our Payload server case:
connect 66.151.138.182:27015

Or simply use this link:
steam://connect/66.151.138.182:27015

(You can click the link above the servers gametracker banner on our main page as well, it will launch TF2 and connect to the servers)

Yes, you're right. I need to go over the mapchooser settings, especially for late night/morning/early afternoon, that's when the server is struggling the most. I'll see what I can do.

Unfortunately mixing game modes doesn't work very well. It might be fine if we had a larger community. I don't mind trying to merge game modes on the 2nd server, but I doubt the issue is maps/modes; it just is very difficult to start a new server for TF2 these days.

I'll be going over these lag spikes with our server host this week. I haven't made any changes lately, besides adding a couple new custom maps. I haven't seen any performance drops when looking at my logs, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I'll run some tests as well.

I highly suggest you spend 5 minutes to register for Verified Membership if you intend to play with us in the future. Don't worry it's completely free, and it should protect you from donor slot kick. It's not 100% immunity, but it's much higher than regular players.

You've already done all the work. You simply need to join our public Steam group ( http://steamcommunity.com/groups/hyperiongaming ) and then enter your SteamID and click Submit on that form. Let me know if you need help.

As for kicking to make room, there are a lot of different ways to handle donor slots, and all have positives and negatives. Our current system is far from perfect as you mentioned, but for people playing frequently with us, the VM (and becoming a donator obviously) system should help a lot.

And the KF2 free weekend is over. I'll be removing the added KF2 servers later this morning, and the 2nd TF2 server will come back.

I removed the 4th KF2 server as performance on the TF2 server was poor yesterday. If needed, I'll remove another. I don't expect to keep more than 2 KF2 servers after the free weekend anyway.

Tripwire is letting everybody play Killing Floor 2 for free this weekend, and since we already had one server hosting this game, I figured we could add a couple more during the traffic spike.

If you're not sure what KF2 is, it's an arena coop zombie shooter for up to 6 players. Players can pick perks, which give them access to different weapons. At the end of each wave, you can purchase better guns/tools, to fend off stronger foes. On the final wave, the team must defeat a boss. The game is still in Early Access, but there's quite a lot of different enemies and maps. They added new perks as well.

Unfortunately, there are no donor slots for now :(

It's a good idea, and that's most likely what we'll end up doing once the final version of the mapchooser is ready. New custom maps to the rotation will only show up during prime time for a while (especially when admins are more likely to be present). If feedback is positive after a while, we'll add the map to the official rotation. If it's negative, we'll remove it and admins can decide to trigger a vote for it if they wish to give it another try.

At this point, no, it's a lot easier for me to manage donations via Paypal.
It's possible to gift a donor membership to somebody else. So you could trade items with someone else who then pays your membership for you via Paypal.

If you would like to know how to "gift" donor membership, let me know ;)

Well, the way it should work is to try to integrate the maps with the most nominations (along with other random maps) to the next map vote. I need to double check the actual configs, but it should trigger when the timelimit reaches 5min or so. If it doesn't happen, then there might be a bug somewhere.

I definitely agree that the mapchooser should try to be a bit more smart about which maps it picks for voting. Right now, the current system doesn't do that. I'll see if I can combine another plugin with the current one.

We really need more feedback/suggestions on these changes, because the mapchooser might be one of the most important aspect for a successful server.
